Written Final Exam Study Materials

It's time to start studying for the final written exam.  Here are tools which may be helpful:

- The test bank questions, sorted by OEC V book chapters, is at:  OEC V Chapter Tests  Answers to each question are located at the end of each question listing.

-  Also included are the actual final exams for several past years.  Same link: OEC V Chapter Tests  

- Finally, One of a past year's Southbay candidates used the Quizlet application to create a set of flashcards containing the questions & answers.  It can be found at http://quizlet.com/29785932/flashcards  Accessible via laptop browser, or mobile using the iPhone & Andriod app.  Once you access/install, if you search for "OEC Final 2013" you should be able to get to them.  Also -- when studying, if you click on the "Shuffle" button, it'll mix them up.

Syllabus Updates

Some minor updates to the syllabus posted at the link above.  Mostly tweaks to chapter readings to better align with class lectures.

Skills Evaluation Sheets

 Here are the evaluation sheets that are important: The scenario evaluation we use in class, the skills evaluation sheet we'll use at the midterm, and a generic version of what will be used at the final exam.  Links here.

Further Clarification on CPR Classes

Given the many changes in AHA & ARC class names, it's been confusing settling in on which class to take.  Joanne has provided some further clarification:

In March, 2015, American Red Cross started teaching BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) as a replacement for CPRO (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).  CPRO will continue for the groups that still require that -- e.g. EMR program, Lifeguarding/Aquatics.

ARC's BLS is essentially the same as American Heart Association's BLS for Healthcare Providers.  AHA's BLS for Healthcare Providers is what [the candidates] should take.

From the ARC's latest instructor bulletin "The most significant changes being incorporated in BLS that differ from CPRO are: Removal of two ventilations prior to beginning compressions for children and infant (and drowning) victims in cardiac arrest, and Removal of back blows as a mandatory treatment for obstructed airway for adults and children."

So, net is that BLS for Healthcare Providers seems to do the trick. But once again, clarify/confirm with your patrol for the final word.

Article: Developing Trends in Oxygen Use with Patients

In follow-up to our discussions tonight on Oxygen use, here is an interesting article on developing thinking and trends in Oxygen use with patients.

As we discussed, for our class, we will follow the OEC protocols.  However, as you might expect, your resort may/will have its own protocols and you should check with them for clarification on exactly what they want to see done under their command.

Week 3 Complete. Looking forward...

Nice work all.  You're all looking strong.  As we've discussed, priorities now are to continue to build both competence & speed in patient assessment and now to assimilate baseline treatment skills.  We'll spend the next couple weeks doing so.  In the meantime, continue to practice your assessment skills, weaving in bandaging and splinting you'll soon learn.  And, of course, CMS...
